π’ Important Update: GST Invoice Series for FY 2025-26
As we step into the new financial year, it’s crucial for all registered businesses under GST to ensure compliance with the invoice series requirements as prescribed under the CGST Rules.
π§Ύ What Does Rule 46(b) of CGST Rules, 2017 Say?
Under Rule 46(b) of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Rules, 2017, every invoice issued by a registered taxpayer must carry a consecutive serial number, which:
✅ Does not exceed 16 characters in length
✅ May be numeric, alphabetic, or alphanumeric
✅ Can include special characters like hyphens (-) and slashes (/)
✅ Must be unique for each financial year
π What Should You Do from April 1, 2025?
Businesses are required to reset their invoice series starting April 1, 2025, to align with the new financial year (FY 2025-26). This means:
✔️ Start a new series or continue an existing pattern, but with fresh numbering
✔️ Ensure that your invoice numbers are sequential and non-repetitive
✔️ Keep your format consistent across all invoices issued during the year
Example Formats You Can Use:
-
INV/2025-26/001
-
001/2025
-
TAX-001
-
FY26-001
You can adopt multiple series if required for different branches or types of supplies, as long as the series is not duplicated within the financial year.
π Why Is This Important?
Failure to follow proper invoice series guidelines may lead to:
π« Non-compliance issues during GST audits
π« Disallowance of Input Tax Credit (ITC) for your customers
π« Penalties or notices from the GST Department
Maintaining a clear and consistent invoicing system ensures both regulatory compliance and smooth business operations.
